For me, the superhero movie era we're in now has my inner 90's child screaming with excitement. Millennials, like myself, grew up during a time of some of the best and worse years of literally everything from politics and the economy, to television shows and video games. Back then, everything seemed awesome. The Power Rangers debuted! Loved it! The Nintendo 64 revolutionized co-op/multiplayer gaming! Loved it! Everquest! Loved it! So now as an adult, when I see my favorite childhood joys brought to life in a mature, exactly how I want, kind of way, the nostalgia is almost overwhelming. So here's my top picks of Must Sees for Millennials!
Originally debuted in 1992, Mortal Kombat is easily considered one of the most iconic video game franchises in the industry. There have been 22 game titles released, 3 movie spinoffs and sequels, comic books, albums, and even a television mini-series. In this newest adaption, the director took a more realistic approach to our favorite characters (similar to how they did The Dark Knight series), and I gotta admit, I think it looks amazing!
Christopher Reeve's Superman and Michael Keaton's Batman were the first heroes I saw on the big screen as a child. And throughout the years, I got to enjoy my role models in various video games. But at the end of the day, there's only so many ways you can rewrite the same story: Hero comes to light of day. Performs extraordinary feats. Villain shows face, causes mayhem. Hero and Villain fight. Hero prevails... The End. That was then, now, we want to see these guys with real issues. We want to see their faults, their insecurities. We want to see them argue and fight... each other. And that's exactly what we got.
You take a famous pop culture series from the 90's, put a darker, dirtier, almost rated R spin on it, give it a good once over with updated HD graphics, but leave the core values that made it a hit in the first place, and my friend... you've got a freakin recipe for one of the greatest remakes of the year!
Officially released for public purchase in 1996, Crash Bandicoot is still one of Sony's top grossing franchises with over 50 million units sold worldwide. Over the past 10 or so years, there have been sequels... there have been prequels... and television shows... and even guest appearances in other video game franchises. But as the years went on, our beloved hero seemed to lose the original charm that we all so loved most about him. That's what usually happens when folks try to "re-imagine" iconic characters in a "new and exciting way"... But what we really wanted, was our old friend back. And finally, someone got the message!
Although Dragonball Z first aired on television in 1989, it wasn't released into the US until 1996 with the English dubbed versions. For you dedicated anime fans out there, I highly recommend you check out the manga and Japanese version of this franchise. Much of the original content, such as blood and gore, alcoholic use, and even nudity were removed and/or altered for most western audiences. Over the past years, millions upon millions of DBZ fans have been waiting, wondering when their dreams of seeing Goku go Super Saiyan on the big screen will come to fruition. And what did they give us?! That horrible piece of $hit Dragonball: Evolution! But luckily, we have YouTube. This fan made film is hands down one of the best variations of this epic series, and is a must see for any anime, manga, and DBZ fanatic. Enjoy!
